Dear friends at Bovenau:
My ancestors on my mother's side once lived in your beautiful town. Years ago, Regina Schertz was most helpful in sending me names and dates from your church register. For that I owe her a large debt of gratitude. My dear mother descends from Joachim Hinrich Fruechting and Margaretha Dorothea Dibbern, through their son, Henning Christopher Fruechting (1777-1822), and his wife Margaretha geb. Krull. The next generation was Heinrich Eduard Fruechting (1806-1855), who left Bovenau to live in Elbing, Prussia (now Elblag, Poland). The next (fourth) generation of my ancestors then left Prussia and lived for a few years in South Russia (now Ukraine) before moving to the United States. I am the seventh generation.
The church register indicates that the family name was originally "Fruechtenicht" but was changed to "Fruechting" in the 1700's. According to the church register, Henning Christopher Fruechting was a master mason at Rolfshoernerholtz. His son continued that trade in Elbing.
I have written much, but I wanted to inform you of what became of one of your sons who left Bovenau many years ago. I am sorry that my parents did not teach me the mother language. They could speak both High German and Lowlands German (Plattdeutsch). Unfortunately, my generation speaks only English in the U.S. While I cannot read the explanations on your website, I enjoy looking at the pictures and hope that some day I will have the privilege of visiting your beautiful town in the land of my ancestors. If anyone is willing to share with me any further information about Rolfshoernerholtz and the surrounding area, I would appreciate receiving an email from you.
